In order to make something work simply and elegantly, you first need to make it work. And sometimes those first steps are anything but simple and elegant.
I'll use a pocket internet communication device as an example.
First we had to learn to communicate.
Then we had to learn how to create computers.
Then how to display information.
Then display information in colour.
Then learn how to shrink them.
Then how to communicate using computers.
Then how to build displays that fit in your pocket.
Then how to interface with them.
And hundreds of thousands of intermediate steps I've left out...
